WINDALCO's Safety Policy states that each employee is entitled to work in a safe and healthy environment; every injury is preventable and each employee is responsible for his/her own safety, as well as that of other employees. Some important components of the programme which are manifestations of the Company's safety policy are:
Ewarton Works and Kirkvine Works have achieved two million and three million employee hours without an Away-From-Work-Case in 1991 and 1995 respectively; and have also been consistently successful in annual competitions for the Minister of Mining Cup and the Ministry of Mining Shield for top safety performance and promotion among alumina producing plants in Jamaica. Port Esquivel, though not considered a part of the bauxite mining and alumina production has also achieved milestones, the latest being 1.7 million employee hours without an Away-From-Work-Case (AWC) as at May 1997. At the end of 1998 WINDALCO finished with 480,047 employee hours or 581 days without an (AWC). The Company's Safety Training continues to be of a high standard, providing information on the latest in safety engineering. The Training Programme includes:
Over the years the Company has significantly reduced the number of injuries at all three locations and in 1994, launched a safety awareness drive in the Lands and Agriculture Department. In November 1997, the Department achieved three years without a lost-time incident. Further, there has been the company-wide introduction of the International Safety Rating System (ISRS). This serves to improve all aspects of our safety performance by constantly measuring our performance according to world class standards. Safety continues to be the one of the highest priorities at West Indies Alumina Company.
